What is it?
“It’s finally happening!” exclaims Jill, of the technique that’s climbing the popularity charts in the color world. Essentially Balayage-meets-finger painting, you simply melt color onto the hair by stroking it on gently with the palm of your hands. The blend is super-even…it’s 100% freehand…and looks so natural, that hair appears to have been kissed by the sun.

Tricks for toning…
“I test my toners on hair swatches so I can dial in the perfect timing,” explains Jill, who says that toners can vary big-time depending on how high you’ve lifted the hair. (Her biggest piece of advice? Don’t ever walk away from your client during the toning process!) “The lift is actually the most important part of toning,” explains Jill. “It’s like working with a fresh white T-shirt versus one that’s old and faded. Make sure your beginning palette has a perfect lift with soft yellow undertones only.”
